BLM welcomes new partnership with USWHBA
Scott Swanson, Public Affairs Specialist

There’s no question about it: volunteers help make the Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Program the success it is!  We at the Bureau of Land Management Eastern States Office are proud to welcome our newest partner the US Wild Horse and Burro Association.  Together, the BLM and USWHBA will work to continue finding good homes for
America
’s ‘Living Legends.’

Declining budgets, workforce reductions, and the geographic extent our office covers makes volunteers and partner groups vital components of our program.  Together, we ensure the public is afforded the chance to adopt a mustang or burro.  These wonderful animals should be enjoyed by all, and our volunteers make certain their legacy is protected and safeguarded.

This May the USWHBA will support the BLM at a 15-trained horse adoption at Rick’s Saddle Shop in
New Jersey. USWHBA members generously offered their time and skill by picking-up two to three animals for training from the Lexington, VA , adoption and committing to prepare them for adoption at Rick’s.  BLM Eastern States State Director Juan Palma
is committed to fruitful partnerships like this designed to adopt out more animals in sensible, fiscally responsible ways.

“We at the BLM are excited to forge this new partnership,” said Juan Palma, State Director.  “Our volunteers have supported the wild horse program for years, and we look forward to the creativity and infusion of new ideas the USWHBA has to offer.”

The BLM manages more land – 256 million acres – than any other Federal agency.  This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western States, including

Alaska.  The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation.  The BLM’s multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.  The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
